Georgiana Cavendish: The Scandalous Duchess of Devonshire

georgiana cavendish duchess of devonshire from the regency era

You might think you’re boujie, but you don’t know boujie until you meet Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire.

Born into the powerful Spencer family at Althorp (yes, that Spencer family — the same one that later produced Diana, Princess of Wales), Georgiana grew up surrounded by wealth, status, and expectations. But when she married one of the richest and most influential men in Britain, the Duke of Devonshire, she didn’t just become a duchess.

She became the duchess.

Georgiana was a fashion icon, a political force, a gambling addict, and the subject of endless gossip columns. London society could not stop talking about her life — from her enormous hats to her complicated marriage and the deeply unconventional relationship she shared with her best friend, Lady Elizabeth “Bess” Foster.

And that’s before we even get to the politics.

In the late 1700s Georgiana campaigned publicly for the Whig party, something women were absolutely not supposed to do. Newspapers mocked her relentlessly, accusing her of “trading kisses for votes.” (Insert eye roll.)

Her story has everything:

  • scandal
  • politics
  • friendship drama
  • gambling debts
  • questionable husbands
  • and a lot of Regency chaos.

Above you can listen to our full two-part series on Georgiana Cavendish where we dive into the drama, the rumors, and the truly wild life of the Duchess of Devonshire.

For a boujie lady, only a boujie cocktail would do. We pair this fashion icon with an equally sweet drink called the Darling Duchess which. It’s sweet and full of booze… just like the duchess!

Some great sources we found (I cannot recommend this book enough. IT was so extensive. We had to leave out A LOT of stuff there’s just so much information about her!)
