In today`s installment of Black women in history, we`re talking Daisy Bates. Daisy was a huge part of the civil rights movement. Her sheer will and no-nonsense attitude takes my breath away. I don`t know that I would have the courage she showed in the face of violence.
📚️Daisy Bates had every reason to be bitter. Her mother was abused and murdered by a gang of white men in segregated Arkansas. But instead of letting the anger overcome her, she decided to let that hurt fuel her fight for change.
📚️ Daisy and her husband started a newspaper that grew in popularity and put the spotlight directly on injustice. She quickly grew as a public figure in civil rights activism.
📚️ Have you ever heard of the Little Rock Nine? Daisy fought to ensure that 9 black students could successfully integrate into a formerly all-white school. Let me tell you, it was not an easy fight. She got death threats. Super not a chill time, but Daisy didn`t let it stop her.
📚️ Daisy was elected president of the Arkansas chapter of the NAACP in 1952 at age 38. She was involved in one way or another with the organization for the rest of her life.
Daisy`s story wasn`t always an easy one to research, especially thinking of the threats she received at her home, but it`s such an important one. Check out our episode on her today. It`s featured on our Black Queens playlist on @spotify
